Landscape designer vs garden designer vs landscape architect

What each role does, which one your project needs, and what to ask before you hire.

\g<1>

Quick answer: A landscape architect is a professionally trained designer, usually with a degree in landscape architecture, who plans outdoor spaces of any scale, including public, commercial and hospitality sites. A landscape designer plans and often builds gardens and outdoor spaces, typically for homes, farmhouses and hotels. A garden designer focuses on planting and garden areas. For most private gardens, a landscape designer or studio that also builds and maintains is enough; for large, complex or regulated sites, involve a landscape architect.

The titles sound alike, and in India they are used loosely. A homeowner looking for help with a garden, a hotel planning new grounds and a developer laying out a township may all search for a "landscape architect", when each actually needs something different. Knowing what each role does helps you hire the right person, ask the right questions and avoid paying for skills the project does not need, or missing ones it does.

What does a landscape architect do?

A landscape architect plans outdoor environments at any scale, with particular strength in large and technical sites. Typical work includes site planning and grading, stormwater and drainage design, roads and parking layouts, public parks and plazas, institutional campuses and large hospitality projects. On big projects the landscape architect usually works alongside the building architect from the start, produces detailed drawings and specifications, and supervises contractors who carry out the work.

What does a landscape designer do?

A landscape designer plans gardens and outdoor spaces, typically for private homes, farmhouses, hotels, resorts and estates. In India, many landscape designers run design-and-build studios: they survey the site, draw the layout and planting plan, then build it with their own team, from soil preparation and drainage to irrigation, hardscape and planting, and maintain it afterwards. The strength of this model is continuity: the people who designed the garden are the ones who plant and care for it.

What does a garden designer do?

A garden designer focuses on the planted parts of a space: choosing plants for the light, soil and climate, arranging them in borders, beds and containers, and creating seasonal interest. Garden designers are a good fit for courtyards, terraces and small to medium gardens where the layout already exists or is simple.

What should you ask before hiring?

  1. Can I see completed work, ideally a few years old, so I can see how it has matured?
  2. Who builds it? Your own team, or a contractor you hand the drawings to?
  3. How do you plan for water, including hard bore water and summer shortages?
  4. What drawings will I receive? Master plan, planting plan, irrigation and lighting?
  5. Who maintains it afterwards, and what does the first year of care include?
  6. How are costs broken down between design, build and maintenance? Our guide to what drives landscaping cost explains the main factors.
