Quick answer: October and November are the best months of the year to plant in North and West India. Plant trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers now so their roots establish over the mild winter before the heat; lay or renovate lawns while the weather is warm but not hot; and sow winter flowers and vegetables. Prepare the soil well, water deeply until the roots settle, and mulch every new bed.
Ask any experienced gardener in North or West India when to plant, and the answer is "after the rains". The soil is warm from summer and moist from the monsoon, the air is cooling, and most pests are easing off. Anything planted in October and November has the whole winter to grow roots before facing its first summer. It is the planting window that decides how a new garden performs for years.
Why is October–November the best time to plant?
- Warm soil encourages fast root growth.
- Mild days mean less water stress on new plants.
- A long run-up to summer: five to six months of root growth before May.
- Nurseries are well stocked after the monsoon.
- Lower water demand through winter while plants establish.
February is the second planting window, but it gives plants far less time before the heat. See the Rajasthan garden calendar for the full year.
What should you plant in October and November?
| Type | Plant now | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shade trees | Neem, karanj, amaltas, kachnar, plumeria | Stake against wind; water deeply weekly |
| Fruit trees | Lemon, guava, pomegranate, amla, ber | Full sun; well-drained pits |
| Hedges | Karonda, murraya, duranta, Clerodendrum inerme | Plant in a trench, not single holes |
| Flowering shrubs | Hibiscus, Tecoma, ixora, oleander, bougainvillea | Pinch tips for bushier plants |
| Climbers | Jasmine, Rangoon creeper, bougainvillea, curtain creeper | Fix supports before planting |
| Lawns | Turf or runners of hardy lawn grasses | Early October is best, while soil is warm |
| Groundcover | Wedelia, Russelia, portulaca | Instead of lawn on slopes and edges |
| Winter flowers | Petunia, calendula, dianthus, salvia | Flower from December to March |
| Winter vegetables | Spinach, methi, radish, carrot, peas, tomato | Sow every few weeks |
Which trees should you plant after the monsoon?
Choose trees for the size they will become and the shade you want in ten years. For hot, dry regions, neem and karanj give dense shade, amaltas and kachnar give spectacular flowers, and plumeria gives scent and form in small spaces. Plant fruit trees such as lemon, guava and pomegranate in full sun. Dig wide pits, mix in compost, plant at the same depth as in the nursery bag, stake young trees, and water deeply once or twice a week through winter.
For low-water choices, see drought-resistant plants for Indian gardens.
Which shrubs, hedges and climbers should you plant now?
- Hedges: plant in a continuous trench filled with improved soil so the hedge grows evenly. Karonda, murraya and duranta are reliable.
- Flowering shrubs: hibiscus, Tecoma, ixora and bougainvillea establish quickly in cool weather and flower well next summer.
- Climbers: put up pergola posts, wires or trellis first, then plant. See pergola design ideas for climbers that suit Indian heat.
Is October a good time to lay a lawn?
Yes, early October is one of the best times. The soil is still warm, so turf and runners root quickly before the cool nights slow growth. Level and improve the soil first, plan irrigation before laying, and keep the new lawn evenly moist until it roots. Keep lawn to areas people actually use; groundcover such as wedelia and Russelia covers slopes and edges with far less water and mowing.
What flowers and vegetables can you sow now?
October and November are the main sowing months for winter flowers and vegetables across the plains. We have separate guides for each:
- Winter flowers that bloom by Diwali, and what to plant for winter
- Winter vegetables to grow on a terrace
How do you plant so it survives the first summer?
- Prepare whole beds, not just planting holes, with compost worked into the soil.
- Install irrigation first, with drip lines to every new plant.
- Plant at the right depth and firm the soil gently.
- Water deeply at planting and regularly through winter.
- Mulch 5 to 8 cm deep, keeping it off stems.
- Feed lightly as new growth starts.
- Prepare for summer from March: shade young plants and move watering earlier in the day. Our garden maintenance checklist sets out the year.
