A roof terrace garden is the conversion of that space into somewhere people actually go. Not a few pots on a slab — a room, with a floor, a ceiling of some kind, and a reason to walk upstairs.
This piece is about what such a space can become and how to judge whether yours can carry one. The construction sequence — load, waterproofing, drainage, irrigation, medium, planting, in that order — is covered separately in setting up a terrace garden.
An evening room. The commonest and the most successful. Shade, seating, scented planting, lighting. Used from about five until late, which in this climate is when outdoor space is pleasant for most of the year. Requires the least of the building.
A green floor. Planting across most of the roof, walked through rather than sat in. Visually the most striking and structurally the most demanding, because the load is spread over the whole slab rather than concentrated where it can be carried.
A productive terrace. Herbs, salad, seasonal vegetables in raised beds. Genuinely productive from October through February in this climate. Needs the most day-to-day attention, and fails fastest when nobody is assigned to it.
A hotel amenity. A different brief entirely — it has to look finished every day, work around occupancy, and survive being walked on by people who are not being careful. Covered on the hotels and resorts page.
Most real projects are two of these. Very few are all four, for the same reason small terraces should not try to be six things.
This is the question that decides everything, and it is not answerable by looking.
Saturated growing medium is heavy. Add containers, water, paving, furniture and people, and a planted roof imposes a load that a slab designed for occasional foot traffic may not have been built for.
The honest answer comes from a structural drawing or an engineer's assessment. What that assessment typically produces is not a yes or a no but a set of constraints — how deep the medium can be, where the heavy elements can sit, and whether anything substantial is possible at all.
Working within a limited capacity is normal and usually productive. Lightweight medium rather than soil. Planting concentrated over beams and load-bearing walls rather than mid-span. Shallow profiles across the open areas and depth only where the structure allows it. A roof that cannot take a green floor can very often take an excellent evening room.
Anyone who specifies a roof terrace garden without asking about the slab is guessing with your building.
Waterproofing. Existing roof waterproofing is generally specified to shed rain, not to sit under permanently damp soil. Those are different duties, and the membrane usually needs upgrading before anything goes on top of it. A root barrier goes above it, because roots find joints given a few years.
Drainage. Everything poured on and everything the monsoon delivers has to leave. That means a drainage layer, filter fabric above it so medium does not wash down and block it, falls to working outlets, and outlets a non-specialist can clean. A blocked outlet in a downpour turns a garden into a tank, and a tank is a load nobody designed for.
Access. Easy to forget at design stage and impossible to retrofit cheaply. If getting to the roof is awkward, the garden will be visited less, maintained less, and eventually abandoned — regardless of how good it is.
Shade. Without it the space is unusable for most of the day for much of the year. A climber on a frame is the coolest option and the least visually heavy.
Wind management. Roofs are exposed. A partial screen — planted, slatted or both — makes the difference between a terrace people sit on and one they retreat from. It also protects the planting, which suffers wind damage that reads exactly like drought.
Something to look at that is not the parapet. A roof terrace surrounded by a waist-high wall feels like a box. Planting on the parapet, or raising the seating slightly, restores the view that made the roof worth using.
Light. The space is used in the evening. Lighting turns it from a place with a nice view into a place people stay.
No rupee figures here — a roof terrace is made to a site and the site decides most of it. But the ongoing costs are consistent and worth knowing before committing:
Water, which on a roof is higher per square metre than at ground level because containers dry faster and exposure is greater.
Somebody's time, weekly at minimum. This is the cost people underestimate and it is the one that determines whether the garden survives.
Seasonal replanting for anything ornamental or productive.
Periodic drainage checks — cheap, quick, and the thing that prevents the expensive failure.
The build is usually the shorter part. Survey, structural assessment and drawings take a few weeks; waterproofing and drainage depend on the state of the existing roof; planting is quick.
Visually, a roof terrace reads as intentional immediately and as established after two growing seasons, once climbers have covered and the structural planting has filled. The binding constraint is almost never construction — it is the planting season, and the date the terrace has to be usable.
